HIDRADENITIS SUPPURATIVA

This is a debilitating, non-contagious, chronic disease of the skin, and adjacent glands and tissues. In particular, the underarms, scrotum, inner thighs, groin, buttocks, and perineum (the area between the anus and scrotum) are affected. The involved tissues develop abscesses (boils), puss filled pockets, that drain. The disease fluctuates in severity with flare-ups that are associated with increased inflammation, tenderness, and drainage. Simple incision and drainage of the puss and/or treatment with antibiotics is generally ineffective. In severe cases, major reconstructive surgery is required with complete wide excision and graft reconstruction.  An example of one of our patients with severe disability from hidradenitis is shown. In these severe cases, a multi-disciplinary approach is required and our team includes Dr. Gelman (Reconstructive Urology), Dr. Mark Kobayashi (Plastic Surgery) and if required, a Colo-Rectal Surgeon.
